Clear Cherry Wide Plank (Face Grain) Countertop
Custom Clear Cherry Wide Plank Solid Wood Butcher Block Countertop
Bring unparalleled warmth and classic American elegance into your home with a custom Clear Cherry wide plank countertop. Treasured by woodworkers and designers alike, American Cherry is renowned for its remarkably smooth texture and a deeply rich color that evolves beautifully over time. Because this is our premium "Clear" grade, the lumber is meticulously selected to consist almost entirely of heartwood. This strict grading process minimizes the pale sapwood and rustic character marks found in standard grades, delivering a highly uniform, flawless, and deeply consistent appearance across the entire surface.
Freshly milled clear cherry presents with a lighter, pale pinkish-red hue, but as it is exposed to natural light, it quickly deepens into a striking, lustrous reddish-brown. This natural aging process ensures your countertop will develop a breathtaking, personalized patina that makes it a brilliant focal point for traditional, transitional, and warm contemporary interiors.
With a Janka hardness rating of 950, Clear Cherry offers a resilient and highly decorative solid wood surface. While it has a slightly softer density compared to extreme powerhouses like Hickory or Hard Maple, it is more than robust enough for daily meal prep, dining, and casual entertaining. Its flawless, furniture-grade appearance makes it an exceptional choice not only for gorgeous kitchen islands, but also for custom dining tables, elegant home office desks, and built-in library shelving where an air of timeless sophistication is desired.
Precision-milled from continuous face-grain planks and expertly crafted with absolutely no butt-joints at our Middlefield, Ohio facility.

Frequently Asked Questions: Solid Wood Butcher Block Countertops
Construction & Craftsmanship
1. What does "Wide Plank" (Face Grain) construction mean?
Wide plank, or face grain, means the countertop is constructed using solid wood boards with the wider face of the wood turned upward. We use various random-width planks to highlight the sweeping, natural beauty of the wood's grain pattern, creating a classic, furniture-grade surface.
2. What are "butt joints" and why don't your countertops have them?
A butt joint occurs when two shorter pieces of wood are joined end-to-end to create a longer board. We never use butt joints in our wide plank countertops. Instead, we use continuous, full-length planks that run from one end of the countertop to the other. This ensures a flawless, uninterrupted grain pattern and a structurally superior surface.
3. Where and how are these countertops manufactured?
Every custom countertop is precision-milled and manufactured to professional trade standards at our facility in Middlefield, Ohio. Many of our woodworkers are craftsmen from the local Amish community, and our workforce brings decades of experience as skilled artisans to every project.
4. Can I order a countertop with custom sink or stove cutouts?
Yes! We cater to both homeowners and professional trades by offering custom CNC cuts, sink cutouts, stove cutouts, and a wide variety of custom edge details. Simply provide your drawings or specifications, and our team will prep the countertop for a seamless installation.

5. What is the difference between "Clear" Cherry and standard Character Cherry?
Our Clear Cherry countertops are crafted using lumber that is rigorously graded and selected to be nearly 100% heartwood. This means we remove most of the pale, creamy sapwood and natural rustic knots, resulting in a highly uniform, consistent, and premium appearance. Character or standard grade cherry includes those natural color variations and knots for a more rustic look.
6. Will my Clear Cherry countertop change color over time?
Yes, more so than almost any other wood species! American Cherry is famous for its photosensitivity. When first manufactured, it often looks quite light and slightly pink. However, as it is exposed to natural sunlight in your home, it will rapidly darken into a deep, rich reddish-brown. This beautiful aging process is a hallmark of genuine cherry wood.
General Hardwood Countertop Care & Use
7. What is the Janka Hardness Scale?
The Janka scale measures the relative hardness of wood and its natural resistance to denting and wear. A higher number indicates a harder, more durable wood surface. If you plan to use your countertop for heavy daily chopping and meal prep, choosing a species with a high Janka rating (like Hickory, Maple, or Walnut) is highly recommended.
8. Are solid wood countertops safe for direct food preparation?
Absolutely. When finished with a food-safe product like Mineral Oil, solid wood butcher block countertops are naturally hygienic and perfectly safe for direct food contact, rolling out dough, and chopping vegetables.
9. Can I use a wood countertop around an under-mount sink?
Yes, wood countertops can be successfully installed around sinks and in wet environments. However, it requires selecting the correct finish. You must use a fully sealed, waterproof finish (such as our Acrylic Polyurethane) rather than a standard mineral oil finish to properly protect the wood from moisture.
10. How do I clean and maintain my new wood countertop?
Maintenance depends entirely on your chosen finish. For tops finished in Mineral Oil, routine re-application of the oil is necessary to keep the wood hydrated and protected. For countertops finished with an Acrylic Polyurethane, simply wipe the surface clean with mild soap and warm water. For specialized finishes like Rubio Monocoat, we recommend using the manufacturer's specific cleaning products.
Your new Hardwood Lumber Company countertop is protected by a one-year warranty against defects in material and workmanship. To ensure your warranty remains valid, any unfinished countertops must be finished and installed within one week of delivery, and you must follow our Countertop Finishing and Installation Guide precisely. Natural wood characteristics, such as minor warping due to environmental changes (often correctable with proper installation) or variations in grain and color, are not considered defects. The warranty does not cover scuffs or scratches on prefinished countertops caused by installation or normal wear and tear. Specific conditions that will void the warranty include not adhering to the finishing and installation guide, failing to support overhangs greater than 10 inches, or not properly protecting cutouts for stoves (from heat) and sinks (from moisture). Additionally, countertops with sink cutouts that have a Mineral Oil Finish or Salad Bowl Finish are not covered under this warranty

To keep your hardwood countertop looking its best and performing well for years to come, proper care is essential. If your countertop arrived unfinished, it's crucial to apply a food-safe finish to all surfaces (top, bottom, and all edges) within one week of delivery. For countertops finished with oil, re-apply a quality butcher block oil or conditioner approximately twice a month, or whenever the wood begins to look dry, to keep it hydrated and protected. Clean your countertop regularly with mild soap and warm water, wiping up spills promptly. For disinfection, a diluted white vinegar solution can be used. Avoid abrasive cleaners and never let water stand on the surface for extended periods. For specialized finishes like Rubio Monocoat, use the recommended cleaning and maintenance products to preserve its unique properties.
Character Cherry
Cherry heartwood varies from rich red to reddish brown and will darken with age and on exposure to light. In contrast, cherry sapwood is creamy white. Cherry wood has a fine uniform, straight grain, satiny, smooth texture, and may naturally contain brown pith flecks and small gum pockets. Cherry is easy to machine, nails and glues well and when sanded and stained, it produces an excellent smooth finish. Our character cherry products are made by mixing the heartwood and sapwood and may also have some pith flecks and small gum pockets along with some tight knots.
