Clear Poplar Stair Tread Details
Poplar is a beautiful lightweight hardwood that paints and stains well. Our clear poplar stair treads will add a bright, rustic feeling to your home. Custom wood stair tread options include thick treads for floating stairs, winder stair treads, and retrofit stair treads, in any custom sizes you might need.
Please Note: Because Poplar wood can have various levels of green colors, and because each piece of wood has its own unique character, grain and color will vary from the sample images shown. All stair treads are custom made to order. All orders revised or cancelled after going into production (within 24 hours after order is received) will have a restocking fee of up to 50%.
Find the Right Match for Your Remodeling Project
Our wooden stair treads are custom and made to order, which means you can find the exact specifications you need. Select from a variety of options.
Standard or Retrofit
First, decide whether you need standard treads or retreads (retrofit). If you’re replacing the entire stair, you’ll need a standard tread. Choose retrofit if you’re simply adding a tread on top of existing stairs for an updated look.
Standard treads come in 1”, 3/4", 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" thickness. Retrofit stair treads are 3/4" thick, with an overhang on the front edge measuring 1" thick x 1-1/4" deep. Our stair treads and risers are made with a three to five piece glue up.
Sizing
Stair treads are available in any length up to 120” and any depth up to 18”.
Nosing
Nosing is the front part of the tread that hangs over the edge of the step. This is a safety feature that can be customized with a bullnose, square edge, or eased edge.
Return
Returns are determined by standing at the bottom of your staircase and looking up. If there is a banister on the left side, you need a left return. If there’s a banister on the right, you need a right return. Double returns are designed for staircases with banisters on both sides.
Returns are 1-1/4" wide and extend 1-1/2" past the back side of the tread. Stair Treads and Risers over 48" long may be slightly oversize with uneven ends. All length measurements are overall, including the return(s). For example, a single return 36" tread will have a 34-3/4" throat size, a double return 48" tread will have a 45-1/2" throat size.
Finish
We can leave your stair treads unfinished if you’d rather finish it yourself. We also offer a variety of finishes, including Tread Coat Varnish, a very durable two-component, commercial grade conversion varnish, specifically made for high traffic areas.
You can also stain the treads yourself, but we encourage you to take advantage of our stain match service. Or, choose a standard stain color from our different options.
Textures
Enhance the look of your poplar stair treads with a variety of textures. We offer several attractive options including hand planed, wire brushed, chiseled edges and distressed. If you prefer to have your stair treads sanded smooth and have no texture, be sure to select NONE in the Texture Options.
The Wire Brushed texture works best on wood with an open grain. On other tighter grain wood species, such as Poplar, the Wire Brushed Texture will not have the same effect and will not be as visible.
Our stair treads are sanded and maintained perfectly on top, while the bottom is left in a potentially rough state, untouched, because when installed, it will never be visible.
Shipping Information
All wood stair parts are custom made to order. Shipping may vary depending on your customization options. Please provide for a standard lead of 1 to 2 weeks for processing, milling, and shipping of stair tread orders.

Poplar
Poplar sapwood is creamy white and may be streaked, while the heartwood can vary from pale yellowish brown to olive green. Poplar has a medium to fine texture and is straight-grained. Poplar takes and holds paint, enamel and stain exceptionally well. We use only the higher quality grades of poplar lumber for our products.
