Choosing a construction

Every round top uses one of three constructions. Each has its own look and size range.

Construction Look Thickness Diameter Best for
Wide plank (face grain) Wide boards with full grain figure 1" to 1-3/4" 12" to 60" Dining and kitchen tables where the grain is on display
Edge grain Long, even stripes 1" to 4-1/2" 12" to 60" Everyday kitchen tables, cafés and the widest choice of thicknesses
End grain Checkerboard of block ends 1-1/2" to 4-1/2" 12" to 48" Statement tables with a classic chopping-block look

How we build it

Every round top starts as a solid edge grain, wide plank or end grain panel, built the same way as our countertops. We cut it to your exact diameter, shape your edge profile, and sand the top and edge smooth.

The underside isn't graded for appearance and may show minor marks. Add the High-Grade Bottom option when it will be visible. See how each construction is built in 3D.

Our Middlefield, Ohio, shop sits in the heart of one of the state's largest Amish communities. Every top we build reflects the skilled craftsmanship of our local Amish workforce. Hardwood Lumber Company has built hardwood products here since 1958. Read our story.

Choosing a wood

Pick a wood for its color, grain and hardness, and compare species in our wood information guide. Most woods come in at least two constructions, and the product grid shows exactly what's available. Every board is unique, and product photos show one example, so expect natural variation in color and grain.

  • Domestic woods: Walnut, Hard Maple, White Oak, Red Oak, Hickory, Clear Cherry, Ash, Beech, Birch, Poplar, Grey Elm, Clear Alder, Cypress and Douglas Fir.
  • Walnut grades: Premium Walnut (100% dark heartwood with no sapwood or knots), Steamed Walnut (steamed for a more even tone) and Rustic Walnut.
  • Oak by sawing method: Quarter Sawn and Rift Sawn White Oak and Red Oak in wide plank, for straight grain with or without ray fleck, plus Live Sawn White Oak in wide plank and edge grain.
  • Rustic, character and figured grades: Rustic Hickory, Rustic Maple, Rustic White Oak, Rustic Cherry, Character Cherry, Knotty Pine, Knotty Alder, Wormy Maple (Ambrosia) and Curly Maple.
  • Imported and exotic hardwoods: African Mahogany, Genuine Mahogany, Sapele, Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba), Spanish Cedar, Iroko, Makore, Black Limba, Acacia, Purpleheart, Zebrawood, Wenge, Leopardwood, Tigerwood, Canarywood, Shedua and Burmese Teak.

Frequently asked questions

What size round table top do I need?

Plan on about 24" of table edge per person for everyday meals and 30" for formal dining. A 48" top seats up to 6 for everyday meals, and a 60" top seats up to 8. Leave about 36" between the table edge and the nearest wall.

How thick should a round table top be?

1-1/2" is our standard and suits most dining and kitchen tables. Edge grain and end grain tops go up to 4-1/2" thick for a heavier, chunkier look.

Which construction is best for a dining table?

Wide plank shows the most grain and gives a classic farmhouse or furniture look. Edge grain gives a clean, striped butcher block look and the widest choice of thicknesses. End grain makes a bold checkerboard statement, up to 48" across.

What finish is best for a dining table?

For a table that sees daily meals, choose a sealed finish such as acrylic polyurethane or full-fill polyester, which resists spills and stains. Oil finishes like mineral oil and Salad Bowl Finish suit tops you plan to cut on.

Do you sell table bases?

Yes. Our custom metal table bases are made to order from powder-coated steel in dining, counter and bar heights. They take 4 to 6 weeks, so order your base and top at the same time.

Can you make round tops for restaurants and cafés?

Yes. We build round tops in any diameter from 12" to 60", so you can match a full dining room. For several tops at once, contact our sales team or request a custom quote.

Are your table tops formaldehyde-free?

Yes. Every table top and countertop we make is formaldehyde-free. Each top is built from solid hardwood in our Middlefield, Ohio, shop, with no laminate or veneer.

How long will it take to get my table top?

Round table tops ship in 2 to 3 weeks, plus transit time. Custom metal table bases take 4 to 6 weeks.
