The Hardwood Lumber Company manufactures high quality Wood Winder Stair Treads at affordable prices. You will be very happy with the quality of our Rustic Hickory Winder Treads. Our Winder Treads are milled with new state-of-the-art equipment. We can make your Winder Treads with a Left or Right Hand Return. Winder Treads are Stair Treads that are intended to be used to round corners that Standard Stair Treads could not. This means that all Winder Treads will be triangular in shape, instead of rectangular like Standard Stair Treads. Winder Treads are designed to make angled turns in staircases far more comfortable and natural. Some might prefer a landing at an angled turn in a staircase, but this stunts the continuity of the staircase and can feel out of place. Rather than using a landing at angled turns, Winder Treads give a far nicer looking appearance that doesn’t feel so stunted. Winder Treads are typically bought in sets of 2 to 3, as any more than this on a single corner can make the steps feel too small.
Our Winder Treads can be made to any custom size or shape to fit your needs. Winder Treads are also available in almost any other hardwood species. Custom Wood Winder Tread options include Standard or Retrofit Stair Treads in any custom sizes you might need. We offer various texture options on all our Wood Winder Treads, including hand-scraped, hand-planed, wire brushed, saw cut, wormholes, chiseled edges, and distressed. All our wood stair parts including Winder Treads can be ordered unfinished or prefinished with our Tread Coat Varnish, a very durable, two-component, commercial grade conversion varnish, specifically made for high traffic areas. We can also stain your Wood Winder Treads with a standard stain color or apply a custom stain of your choice, using our stain match service.
All Winder Stair Treads are custom made to order. All orders revised or cancelled after going into production (within 24 hours after order is received) will have a restocking fee of up to 50%.
Our Standard Stair Treads are a full 1" thick. Retrofit Stair Treads, also known as Retreads, are made to fit over your existing stairs. Our Retrofit Winder Treads are 3/4" thick, with an overhang on the front edge, measuring 1" thick x 1-1/4" deep. The depth selected when placing an order will be the overall depth, including the overhang.
Returns are 1-1/4" wide and extend 1-1/2" past the back side of the tread. A left or right hand return is determined by standing at the bottom of the stairs looking up, though this differs slightly with Winder Treads due to their unique purpose. All sizes are overall, including the return(s). For example, a Right Hand Return 36" Tread will have a 34-3/4" throat size.
Rustic Hickory Winder Stair Treads will have filled knots.
Our Winder Treads are sanded and maintained perfectly on top, while the bottom is left in a potentially rough state, untouched, because when installed it will never be visible.
If you want your Winder Treads to be sanded smooth and have no texture, be sure to select NONE in the Texture Options.
Wire Brushed Texture works best on wood with an open grain, such as White Oak, Red Oak, and Ash. On other tighter grain wood species, the Wire Brushed Texture will not have the same effect and will not be as visible.
Because each piece of wood has its own unique character, grain and color will vary from the sample images shown.
Rustic Hickory Winder Stair Treads ship within 1 to 2 weeks.
Note: Lead times may vary based on order volume and seasonal demand. Please contact our sales team online or by phone at 1-800-798-1269 for questions regarding current order lead times.
Hickory
Hickory is the hardest, heaviest and strongest American wood. The sapwood of hickory is white, tinged with inconspicuous fine brown lines while the heartwood is pale to reddish brown. Hickory is coarse-textured and the grain is fine, usually straight but can be wavy or irregular. The wood can be sanded to a good finish. Hickory grain pattern welcomes a full range of medium-to-dark finishes. We use only the higher quality grades of hickory lumber for our products.
