Little Journeys Arts & Crafts Book Stand
The Little Journeys Book Stand takes its name and its form from the Roycroft workshops of East Aurora, New York, where Elbert Hubbard’s craftsmen built stands to hold his popular Little Journeys booklets. Our version keeps the honest proportions and exposed joinery that defined the original, built in solid quartersawn white oak with the ray-fleck figure Arts & Crafts makers prized.
The joinery is the ornament. Each shelf runs straight through the double-post side frames and is locked in place with a tapered wooden key, a traditional keyed through-tenon that stands proud of the frame on both sides. Below, arched trestle feet give the stand a broad, steady footprint, and shaped cleats carry the top. Nothing is hidden, and nothing is there just for show.
The top surface holds a reading lamp, a stack of current reads, or a favorite object on display. Two open shelves below, spaced 9-1/2" apart, hold books, magazines, and collectibles, and a low rail along the back of each shelf keeps books from sliding off.
Set it beside a reading chair, at the end of a sofa, in an entryway, or in a library or home office. Its clean, architectural lines are at home in Craftsman, Mission, and traditional interiors, and they hold their own in a modern room too.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Little Journeys book stand?
In the early 1900s, Elbert Hubbard’s Roycroft community published Little Journeys, a long-running series of booklets profiling notable writers, artists, and thinkers. The Roycroft furniture shop built a small, sturdy stand to hold them, and the design became one of the best-known pieces of the American Arts & Crafts movement. Our stand is inspired by that original, built with the same exposed joinery and straightforward proportions.
What is keyed through-tenon joinery?
It’s one of the oldest ways to join furniture. The end of each shelf passes completely through a mortise in the side frame, and a tapered wooden key is driven through the projecting tenon to draw the joint tight. The joint relies on wood-on-wood compression rather than metal hardware, and it was a signature detail of Arts & Crafts furniture because it shows exactly how the piece is held together.
Why does the oak have those shimmering flecks?
That’s ray fleck, the figure revealed when white oak is quartersawn. Cutting the log this way exposes the tree’s medullary rays as ribbons and flakes across the grain. It’s the look most associated with Arts & Crafts and Mission furniture, and quartersawn oak is also more stable than flatsawn lumber.
What fits on the shelves?
With 9-1/2" between shelves, most novels, paperbacks, and standard hardcovers stand upright. Taller art and coffee table books can lie flat. The top surface is a good home for a lamp, plant, or display piece.
Can I order it in a different wood?
Yes. The stand shown is quartersawn white oak, but we can build it in other domestic hardwood species. Contact us and we’ll recommend options based on your room and the look you’re after.
Will my book stand look exactly like the photos?
Close, but not exactly. Wood is a natural material, and grain pattern, ray fleck, and color vary from board to board. Those differences are what make each stand one of a kind.
How do I care for my book stand?
Dust with a soft, dry cloth and wipe spills promptly. Avoid harsh cleaners, standing water, and placement directly against radiators or heat vents. Like all solid wood furniture, keep it out of sustained direct sunlight to prevent uneven color change.

White Oak
White oak sapwood is light-colored and the heartwood is light to dark brown. White oak is mostly straight-grained with a medium to coarse texture, with longer rays than red oak. White oak therefore has more figure. We use only the higher quality grades of white oak lumber for our products.
