Poplar Landing Tread Details
Poplar is a common, affordable wood option for stair parts and treads. Because it’s soft, poplar can be easily worked and shaped.
At the Hardwood Lumber Company, we use only high grades of poplar lumber for our stair landing treads. Milled with new, state-of-the-art equipment, you can rest assured you're receiving the best quality parts for your staircase.
Please Note: Because each piece of wood has its own unique character, grain and color will vary from the sample images shown.
All stair treads are custom made to order. All orders revised or canceled after going into production (approximately 2 to 3 days after order is received) will have a restocking fee of up to 50%.
Customize Your Poplar Landing Treads
You can fully customize your poplar landing treads. Simply specify your dimensions and then add extra details, like texture and edge details, to create the perfect look for your staircase renovation or build.
Tread Sizing
Your landing treads can be milled up to 120” long with a depth of 3 ½” or 5 ½”. All poplar landing treads have an overhang measuring 1 ¼” deep and 1" thick, with a standard body thickness of ¾”. Other thickness sizes (1/2”, 9/16”, or 5/8”) include a set-up fee.
Choose from our standard sizes or contact us for a custom landing tread quote. The standard ¾” thick Landing Tread is the only size with a groove to fit standard ¾” hardwood flooring. Depth sizes are overall, including the depth of the overhang.
You may also enter custom dimensions for cutting boards outside of these measurements. Please choose “custom size” from the Depth x Length menu.
Nosing Style
Multiple nosing styles are available for your custom landing treads, including bullnose, square edge, and eased edge. View examples of different stair nosing options to decide which is right for you.
Finish
You can choose to leave your landing treads unfinished or prefinished with a tread coat. Our tread coat is a very durable two-component, commercial grade conversion varnish, specifically made for high traffic areas.
For best results, treads should be finished to protect the wood. We can pre-finish your stair treads with a variety of materials. You can also choose to add a stain to your treads. We offer stain match services if you would like your stairs to match another wooden surface in your home.
Textures
All landing treads are sanded and maintained perfectly on top, while the bottom is left in a potentially rough state, untouched, because it will never be visible when installed.
We offer various texture options on all our wood stair treads including handscraped, wire brushed, sawcut, and distressed. If you prefer to have your Stair Treads sanded smooth and have no texture, be sure to select NONE in the Texture Options.
Note: Wire brushed texture works best on wood with an open grain. For closed grain woods, like poplar, the wire brushed texture will not have the same effect and will not be as visible.

To maintain the beauty and longevity of your hardwood stair parts, including treads, risers, and railings, regular cleaning is key. Begin by sweeping or vacuuming the stairs thoroughly to remove loose dust and debris, starting from the top and working your way down. For a deeper clean, wipe down the wood surfaces with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water and a mild, wood-safe soap or an oil soap specifically designed for wood. Ensure you dry the wood promptly with a clean cloth. Don't forget to dust and wipe railings and balusters regularly to keep the entire staircase looking its best.
Poplar
Poplar sapwood is creamy white and may be streaked, while the heartwood can vary from pale yellowish brown to olive green. Poplar has a medium to fine texture and is straight-grained. Poplar takes and holds paint, enamel and stain exceptionally well. We use only the higher quality grades of poplar lumber for our products.
