Premium Walnut Wide Plank Butcher Block Countertop

This is a solid American black walnut countertop built from 100% dark heartwood, with no light sapwood and no knots. It is made wide plank, also called face grain, which means the board face is turned up so you see the full cathedral grain figure across the surface. Random-width planks run the entire length of the top with no butt joints or finger joints anywhere in the piece. Every countertop is milled to your dimensions by our craftsmen in Middlefield, Ohio, most of them from the local Amish community.

What makes this countertop different

  • Premium grade is the highest walnut grade on the hardwood market, containing nearly 100% heartwood, which gives it the rich brown, purple, and red tones and the deep uniform color that a heartwood-and-sapwood mix cannot match.
  • Our walnut is air dried naturally rather than force dried, which preserves the color instead of muddying it.
  • Each plank runs the full length of the countertop, so there are no end-to-end joints interrupting the grain the way there are on finger-jointed tops from other suppliers.
  • We can build this top up to 1-3/4 inches thick, 84 inches deep, and 138 inches long, so most islands and full runs can be made from a single piece.
  • Every countertop ships with a finished top surface and four finished edges; if the underside will be visible, add the High-Grade Bottom Surface option and we will grade the bottom to match.
  • We can CNC your sink and stove cutouts, cut waterfall miters and 45-degree corners, and prep the ends for butt joining with countertop bolts before the piece leaves our shop.

Where this countertop works best

Premium walnut is a furniture-grade surface, so it belongs where people will actually look at it: a kitchen island, a bar top, a peninsula, a conference table, or a floating vanity. The dark chocolate tone reads as a deliberate focal point against white or painted cabinetry and grounds a room with a lot of stone and metal in it. Because face grain shows knife marks more readily than end grain does, we recommend it as a work surface rather than a chopping surface, and suggest a separate cutting board for prep. If you want a top you can cut directly on, look at our end grain butcher block instead.

How to configure yours

Size. Enter depth and length in decimal inches, then choose a thickness of 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, or 1-3/4 inches. Thicker tops carry longer unsupported spans and read heavier visually.

Finish. Choose acrylic polyurethane for a durable film finish, Rubio Monocoat or a mineral oil finish for a natural feel you maintain yourself, or polyester full fill for a glass-smooth surface. You can also order it unfinished and finish it on site. Our wood finish guide walks through each option in detail.

Stain and stain match. Walnut takes stain well if you want to shift the tone. If you need the top to match existing cabinetry or flooring, add Stain Match and send us a sample; there is a one-time $125 stain match fee per order.

Edge detail and texture. Choose from more than two dozen profiles, from a simple 1/8 inch radius to a Rustic Edge, French Tradition, Cove & Bead, or a Roman Ogee. One note on texture: wire brushing works best on open-grain woods like oak, and because walnut has a tighter grain the effect will be subtle. If you want the surface sanded perfectly smooth, select None under Texture.

Stretcher bars. Inset metal stretcher bars sit flush in the underside and help control seasonal wood movement on wider tops.

Common questions

How is Premium Walnut different from your regular Walnut?
Premium is nearly all dark heartwood, so the color is consistently deep brown throughout. Our standard Walnut runs roughly 60% or more heartwood with the balance in lighter sapwood, which gives it more contrast and variation. Rustic Walnut has the most character, with up to 40% sapwood plus filled knots. If you want an even, dark top with no light streaks, Premium is the one.

Can I cut directly on this countertop?
We would not recommend it. Face grain construction means the knife cuts across the wood fibers rather than between them, so marks show and stay. Use a cutting board on top and this surface will look good for decades. If you want a surface built to take knife work, our end grain butcher block is the right choice.

Do I have to finish it myself if I order it unfinished?
Yes, and it needs to happen quickly. An unfinished top must be sealed on all six surfaces, meaning the top, the bottom, and all four edges, within one week of delivery. Sealing only the visible faces lets the piece take on moisture unevenly, which causes warping and voids the warranty. If you would rather not manage that, choose one of our shop-applied finishes.

Can you cut the sink opening for me?
Yes. Select Sink or Stove Cutout and upload your drawing or template, and we will CNC it before shipping. One important exception: countertops with a sink cutout that are finished with Mineral Oil or Salad Bowl Finish are not covered under warranty, because those finishes do not stand up to standing water at the cutout edge. For a sink application, choose acrylic polyurethane or polyester.

Will my countertop look exactly like the photos?
No, and that is the nature of solid hardwood. Every board carries its own grain pattern and color. Your top will share the same character and color family as the photos, but the specific figure will be unique to your piece. If you want to see and feel the actual material first, order a walnut wood sample before you commit.

How much maintenance does it need?
It depends on the finish. An oil-finished top wants a fresh coat of butcher block oil or conditioner about twice a month, or any time the wood starts looking dry. A polyurethane or polyester top needs nothing beyond routine cleaning. Either way, wipe spills promptly, clean with mild soap and warm water, use diluted white vinegar when you want to disinfect, and keep abrasive cleaners off the surface.

Ordering and delivery

All wood countertops are made to order, with a standard lead time of 2 to 3 weeks for milling, finishing, and shipping. Because production typically begins within 24 hours of your order, custom countertops cannot be cancelled, modified, or returned once they enter the shop. Tops under 70 lbs and 96 inches ship FedEx or UPS Ground; larger pieces ship palletized via freight, with liftgate and white glove delivery available at checkout. Please inspect your delivery and note any damage on the receipt before you sign.

Questions about a specific project? Contact our sales team or call 1-800-798-1269, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Eastern. Please read the full warranty and installation requirements before ordering, particularly the support requirements for overhangs greater than 10 inches.

Description

Your new Hardwood Lumber Company countertop is protected by a one-year warranty against defects in material and workmanship. To ensure your warranty remains valid, any unfinished countertops must be finished and installed within one week of delivery, and you must follow our Countertop Finishing and Installation Guide precisely. Natural wood characteristics, such as minor warping due to environmental changes (often correctable with proper installation) or variations in grain and color, are not considered defects. The warranty does not cover scuffs or scratches on prefinished countertops caused by installation or normal wear and tear. Specific conditions that will void the warranty include not adhering to the finishing and installation guide, failing to support overhangs greater than 10 inches, or not properly protecting cutouts for stoves (from heat) and sinks (from moisture). Additionally, countertops with sink cutouts that have a Mineral Oil Finish or Salad Bowl Finish are not covered under this warranty

To keep your hardwood countertop looking its best and performing well for years to come, proper care is essential. If your countertop arrived unfinished, it's crucial to apply a food-safe finish to all surfaces (top, bottom, and all edges) within one week of delivery. For countertops finished with oil, re-apply a quality butcher block oil or conditioner approximately twice a month, or whenever the wood begins to look dry, to keep it hydrated and protected. Clean your countertop regularly with mild soap and warm water, wiping up spills promptly. For disinfection, a diluted white vinegar solution can be used. Avoid abrasive cleaners and never let water stand on the surface for extended periods. For specialized finishes like Rubio Monocoat, use the recommended cleaning and maintenance products to preserve its unique properties.

Premium Walnut

The sapwood of walnut is creamy white, while the heartwood is light brown to dark chocolate brown, occasionally with a purplish cast and darker streaks. Walnut is generally straight-grained, but sometimes with wavy or curly grain that produces an attractive and decorative figure. Walnut works easily with hand and machine tools, and nails, screws and glues well. It holds paint and stain very well for an exceptional finish and is readily polished. Our Premium Walnut comprises nearly 100% heartwood, showcasing a rich, dark walnut color of premium quality. Its construction and feel are incredibly luxurious, enhancing the overall premium experience.

Solid Premium Walnut wide-plank surface manufactured to showcase the wood's natural cathedral grain, providing a warm and prestigious focal point for modern home and office interiors.
