This is walnut the way the tree actually grows it. Our standard grade runs roughly 60% or more dark heartwood with the balance in pale sapwood, so light streaks and ribbons move through the chocolate brown rather than being sorted out of it. The planks are laid face up (wide plank, or face grain), putting the full cathedral figure on the surface, and each one runs the entire length of the top with no butt joints or finger joints anywhere in the piece.

What makes this countertop different

• The sapwood is the point. Where Premium grade gives you an even wall of dark brown, standard walnut gives you contrast and movement, which reads as more obviously handmade and less like a manufactured surface.
• It is a more affordable way to get real American black walnut in a face grain top than Premium, since you are not paying for heartwood-only selection. Rustic Walnut costs less still, with knots as part of the look.
• Our walnut is air dried naturally rather than force dried, which preserves the purple and red undertones instead of muddying them to flat brown.
• Full-length planks mean the grain runs uninterrupted end to end, unlike finger-jointed tops where a visible seam crosses the surface every few feet.
• Buildable up to 84 inches deep, 138 inches long, and 1-3/4 inches thick.
• Ships with a finished top and four finished edges. Add High-Grade Bottom Surface if the underside will be visible.

Where this countertop works best

Standard walnut suits a kitchen where the wood is meant to feel warm rather than formal. It works on an island, a peninsula, a long perimeter run, or a desk surface, and the sapwood variation is forgiving in a room that already has a lot going on, such as patterned tile, busy stone, or open shelving. It is a work surface rather than a chopping surface: face grain means the blade cuts across the fibers instead of between them, so knife marks show and stay. Keep a board on top. A note on configuring this top

Walnut takes stain well if you want to shift the tone, though most customers leave it natural. Under Texture, expect wire brushing to be subtle. Walnut’s grain is tight, and brushing needs the large open pores of a wood like oak to bite into. Select None if you want the surface sanded perfectly smooth.

Common questions

How much light sapwood will I actually see?
On a typical top, expect pale streaks running through several of the planks, concentrated along board edges where the sapwood sits in the log. The proportion varies piece to piece. If you want a top with no light streaks at all, order Premium grade instead, which is selected for heartwood only.

Is walnut hard enough for a kitchen counter?
Yes, though it is softer than maple or oak at 1,010 on the Janka scale. In practice that means walnut dents more readily under a dropped pan and takes fine scratches sooner. Most people find that acceptable, because the dark color hides marks that would be obvious on a pale wood.

Will it lighten over time?
It will. Walnut is unusual among hardwoods in that it lightens and warms with light exposure rather than darkening. Over several years the deepest brown mellows toward a softer, redder tone. A finish with UV inhibitors slows it; nothing stops it entirely.

What if I order it unfinished?
It must be sealed on all six surfaces (top, bottom, and all four edges) within one week of delivery. Sealing only what shows lets the piece take on moisture unevenly, which warps it and voids the warranty.

Will mine look like the photos?
It will share the color family and the general character, but the specific figure is unique to your piece, more so on this grade than on Premium, since sapwood placement varies board to board. Order a walnut wood sample if you want to see it in hand first.
