Choosing a wood

We offer more than 50 species and grades. Domestic hardwoods include hard maple, walnut, cherry, hickory, ash, and red and white oak, plus rustic and character grades. Imported woods include sapele, African mahogany and Brazilian cherry. Our domestic hardwoods come from American timber operations, many in the Appalachian region.

Choose a wood for its color, grain and hardness, and compare them in our wood information guide. Every board is unique, so expect natural variation in color and grain from the photos. Still deciding? Order wood samples before you buy.

Finishes, edges and options

Configure your top online and see your price as you go. Options vary by construction, and each style's page lists what's available.

  • Finishes: ship unfinished, or choose acrylic polyurethane, full-fill polyester, mineral oil, Salad Bowl Finish or Rubio Monocoat. Add a stain or a custom stain match. Compare wood finishes.
  • Edge profiles: 29 profiles, from a simple radius or bevel to ogee, cove and bead. See all edge details.
  • Textures: hand planed, hand scraped, wire brushed, saw cut or distressed. See texture options.
  • Island shapes: 11 island top shapes, from curved and arched fronts to stadium and ellipse tops.
  • Cutouts and joints: CNC-cut sink and cooktop openings from your drawing, 45° angle cuts, waterfall miters and butt-joint prep.
  • Inset Stretcher Bars: an extra-cost option for tops 32" deep or more that helps control warping and seasonal movement.

Why choose a solid wood countertop?

A solid hardwood countertop brings a warmth to the kitchen that stone and laminate don't. It's durable for everyday use. Because it's solid wood all the way through, you can sand and refinish it to remove wear rather than replace it. Every top we make is formaldehyde-free, with no laminate or veneer.

Butcher block suits most kitchen styles. Wide plank and rustic grades fit farmhouse kitchens, clean edge grain maple suits modern and Scandinavian designs, and walnut adds warmth to a contemporary space. Pair a wood island with stone perimeter counters, or run wood throughout. Browse our countertop photo gallery and customer gallery for ideas.

How we build them

Every countertop is made to order in our Middlefield, Ohio, shop. We cut, glue, flatten and sand each top, then shape the edges, cut any openings and apply your finish before it ships. We even make our own blended grain lumber for our Signature Blended tops.

Our Middlefield, Ohio, shop sits in the heart of one of the state's largest Amish communities. Every top we build reflects the skilled craftsmanship of our local Amish workforce. Hardwood Lumber Company has built hardwood products here since 1958. Read our story.

Frequently asked questions

What is butcher block?

Butcher block is a countertop made from strips or blocks of solid hardwood glued together. Edge grain tops use long strips set on edge. End grain tops use blocks with their ends facing up. Wide plank tops use full-width boards with the face grain up.

Which type of butcher block is best for a kitchen?

Edge grain suits most kitchens and offers the most woods and sizes. If you'll chop on the counter, choose end grain. For a showpiece island, choose wide plank or a bookmatched slab. For long runs up to 192", choose Signature Blended Grain.

How much does a butcher block countertop cost?

The price depends on the construction, wood, size, thickness and finish. Configure any top on its product page to see your exact price before you order. In Stock tops cost 10% less than the same top made to order.

How long does a custom countertop take?

Most tops ship in 2 to 3 weeks, and lead times can run longer in busy seasons. Bookmatched Artisan Series tops take 8 weeks or more. In Stock tops ship the next business day.

How thick should a butcher block countertop be?

Most of our tops default to 1-1/2", which suits most kitchen counters. End grain starts at 2". For a chunkier look on an island or bar, go up to 4-1/2" in edge grain or end grain.

Can you cut a sink opening in a wood countertop?

Yes. Add a sink or cooktop cutout, upload a drawing with your dimensions, and we'll CNC-cut the opening before your top ships. Around a sink, choose a sealed finish such as acrylic polyurethane or full-fill polyester. Our warranty doesn't cover mineral oil or Salad Bowl Finish tops installed around sinks, and the sink must go in with adhesive and a moisture barrier.

Do your countertops come finished?

Your choice. Tops ship unfinished unless you add a finish. Finish an unfinished top within one week of delivery to protect the wood and keep your warranty. In Stock tops come prefinished.

Do you ship countertops nationwide?

Yes. We ship from Middlefield, Ohio, to all 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii, and to Canada. Smaller tops go by FedEx or UPS Ground, and larger tops by freight, with liftgate or white-glove delivery available.

How do I care for a butcher block countertop?

Wipe up spills promptly, clean with a mild, wood-safe cleaner, and use trivets and cutting boards. Oiled tops need fresh oil from time to time. Our care guide covers each finish.

Are your countertops formaldehyde-free?

Yes. Every countertop we make is formaldehyde-free. Each top is built from solid hardwood in our Middlefield, Ohio, shop, with no laminate or veneer. We even make our own blended grain lumber.
